It’s time for the glitziest, most glamorous race of the season as drivers take to the tight and twisty street circuit in Monte Carlo. Two weeks ago Fernando Alonso was victorious at his home race – the Spanish GP – finishing ahead of Lotus’ Kimi Räikkönen and Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa. Pole sitter Nico Rosberg went backwards in the race as Mercedes once again showed impressive pace in qualifying but struggled come race-day. Championship leader Sebastian Vettel finished in fourth place, and saw his lead trimmed to just four points.

Monaco GP Stats

Circuit Name: Circuit de Monaco
Number of Laps: 78
Circuit Length: 3.34okm
Lap Record: 1:14.439 M Schumacher (2004)
2012 Results: 1.Mark Webber 2. Nico Rosberg 3. Fernando Alonso

There are six previous Monaco GP winners still on the grid: Mark Webber, Sebastian Vettel, Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen.

Pirelli are bringing the soft and super-soft compound tyres – this is only the second appearance this season for both compounds with super-softs used at the Australian GP at the start of the season and softs were used at the Chinese GP

Esteban Gutierrez, Giedo van der Garde, Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton have all raced at Monaco before in a range of series including GP2 and Formula Renault 3.5. Valterri Bottas has never raced there before

McLaren are the most successful team around the streets of Monte Carlo with 15 wins.

Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso have won twice each making them the most successful current drivers

Fernando Alonso could make history this weekend by becoming the first driver to win the Monaco GP for three different teams. He has previously won for Renault (2006) and McLaren (2007).

Tom Kristensen will be the driver steward this weekend

After the Spanish GP, which is traditionally where teams start bringing their big upgrade packages, the Monaco GP is where a number of drivers will run special commemorative helmets. Kimi Räikkönen is once again wearing a tribute to James Hunt while Fernando Alonso’s helmet is gold and depicts a jigsaw featuring his career wins. Jean-Eric Vergne’s helmet is a tribute to François Cevert who died in a qualifying accident at Watkins Glen in 1973. These are just a few drivers who have changed their helmets, while others including Paul di Resta, Jules Bianchi and Sergio Perez also have tweaks. The Circuit de Monaco has the slowest average speed of any track on the calendar (160kph) with teams focusing on having as much downforce as possible. A lap around Monaco sees engines at full throttle for just 35% of it.

The Monaco GP has some unique factors including the tunnel and the fact the streets run alongside the harbour. It’s a prestigious event and one that every driver will want to add to their list of wins. Unlike previous races this season, the Monaco GP will feature only one DRS zone and the activation zone is just after Turn 19 and on the pit straight. There have been a number of improvements made to the track since 2012 including resurfacing and improvements to barriers.

What came before?

Mercedes locked out the front row in Spain but their race pace let them down once again and both Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton spent a lot of the race being overtaken. After being overtaken by Pastor Maldonado, Hamilton displayed his frustration over the team-radio at even being overtaken by a Williams. It was Fernando Alonso who won the race, his home GP, ahead of Kimi Räikkönen and Felipe Massa. Rosberg ended up in sixth while Hamilton finished outside the points in 12th. McLaren got another double points finish with Jenson Button finishing ahead of his team-mate, having been out-qualified by him. Paul di Resta took another solids points finish with Daniel Ricciardo taking one point.

What’s to come?

Nico Rosberg dominated both free practice sessions on Thursday, with Lewis Hamilton backing this up in free practice 2. Mercedes have demonstrated impressive speed when it comes to qualifying but this disappears over a race distance as they struggle to maintain their tyres. Monaco could provide them with their best chance of winning yet as it is difficult to overtake around the twisty street circuit. If they can lock out the front row like they did at the Spanish GP then this could play right into their hands come race day. Red Bull admitted that they struggled with one lap pace during practice so this could compromise them when it comes to qualifying. Kimi Räikkönen showed a glimpse of more good race pace from Lotus while team-mate Romain Grosjean compromised running time after getting too close to the barriers and damaging his front suspension. Fernando Alonso has it all to play for as he aims to be the first to win the Monaco GP for three different teams. His team-mate Felipe Massa had a strong showing in Spain and had it not been for his three place grid penalty after qualifying for impeding, it could have been a case of what might have been for the Brazilian with his team-mate winning the race. McLaren will be hoping to score more consistent points with Force India also looking to continue their recent good form.

There have also been no safety cars yet this season, and Monaco could well be where we see the first one.

The North West 200 came to a disappointing end on Saturday after persistent rain caused the race organisers to call off the event. Surface water and a lack of visibility due to spray left them with no choice but to draw the event to a close, with safety being of paramount importance. Of the eight races scheduled to take place, only three were completed in full when the first Supersport, Supertwin and Superstock races took place on Thursday evening. The second Supersport race, which was the first on Saturday, saw the lead group complete only two full laps and no more. Along with two victories for Alistair Seeley, and one apiece for Jeremy McWilliams and Michael Dunlop, there were podiums for Guy Martin, James Hillier, Jamie Hamilton, Gary Johnson, Bruce Anstey and Lee Johnston.

Guy Martin gets interviewed before practice

The action started on Tuesday with the newcomers getting accustomed to the track. This group included British Superbikes rider Josh Brookes who made his North West 200 debut for the Tyco Suzuki team, partnering Guy Martin. It was a damp start but as the morning progressed, the sun came out and the track dried up. Tuesday also saw riders set their first qualifying times which would help to determine their grid slots for the races on Thursday and Saturday. After qualifying on Thursday, which took place during the day, times were combined and each rider’s best time determined where they would start the race. In Supersport it was John McGuinness who secured pole position, with team-mate Bruce Anstey and Guy Martin filling up the front row. For the Supertwins it was Jeremy McWilliams who set the fastest time, putting him ahead of KMR Kawasaki team-mate Michael Rutter and William Davison. In Superstock Alistair Seeley qualified ahead of Michael Dunlop and John McGuinness.

Alistair Seeley is interviewed by BBC’s Stephen Watson after his second victory

After further qualifying on Thursday, the first three races took place on Thursday evening. First up was Supersport which saw Michael Dunlop pull away and lead comfortably from Guy Martin for the whole race. However Alistair Seeley, who started in the second group, won the race with corrected times – just a second faster than Michael Dunlop who was a more than comfortable 24 seconds ahead of Guy Martin. Following that, the Supertwins were up next and it was a great result for Ryan Farquhar’s KMR Kawasaki team as Jeremy McWilliams won with Jamie Hamilton taking his maiden North West 200 podium. James Hillier also took his first podium on the Triangle circuit. The top four were separated by just over three seconds with Ivan Linton narrowly missing out on a podium. The third and final race on Thursday evening saw Alistair Seeley again victorious, this time in Superstock, ahead of Bruce Anstey and Gary Johnson.
This result meant that Bruce Anstey has maintained his rather impressive record of finishing on the podium at least once every year since 2002.

Jamie Hamilton celebrates with team boss Ryan Farquhar

Following a rare day of glorious sunshine on Friday, Saturday was a stark contrast with persistent rain. John McGuinness and former North West 200 race winner Steve Plater took people out on parade laps before racing was due to commence. The second Supersport race eventually started but was red flagged after just two laps after four people came off, thankfully without serious injury, due to the adverse weather conditions. Initially the race was going to be restarted but it was continuously delayed until the race win was eventually awarded to Michael Dunlop with Bruce Anstey and Lee Johnston also on the podium. Jamie Hamilton entertained the crowds as he was wheeled around the grid in a trailer during the delay with oars, pretending he was rowing a boat. Around 3pm, Race Director Mervyn White announced that, due to the bad weather, the rest of the racing had been cancelled. The stewards had met to discuss the conditions, along with experienced riders such as Michael Rutter and John McGuinness.

John McGuinness waits to go on a parade lap on Saturday

After similar problems in 2011, when just one race was completed, questions have been raised about the future of North West 200 and how similar situations can be avoided. Obviously, it is impossible to control the weather, or know exactly what it is going to do. Currently roads are closed on Tuesday morning, Thursday morning and evening, and all day on Saturday. One possibility that has already been touted is an amendment of the Road Closing Orders. Mervyn White has revealed that currently they are allowed to close the roads for a maximum of three days, but this then leaves the event vulnerable to adverse weather conditions, as demonstrated last week. If they were allowed to close roads on an additional day, for example this year Friday was nice, then it could allow races to take place if forecasts were bad. In 2012 races were held on Thursday evening for the first time.

Following four flyaway races and a three week gap, this weekend Formula One heads to Barcelona for the Spanish GP. The race, which kicks off the European leg of the season, was won last year by Pastor Maldonado. It was Williams’ first win since Juan Pablo Montoya in 2004. The picture looks distinctly different this year – Sebastian Vettel has a comfortable lead in the championship, backed up by two race wins. The Bahrain GP was a case of deja vu, with Vettel winning the race ahead of Lotus’ Kimi Räikkönen and Romain Grosjean – an identical result to 2012.

Spanish GP Stats

Circuit Name: Circuit de Catalunya
Number of Laps: 66
Circuit Length: 4.655km
Lap Record: 1:21.670 K Räikkönen (2008)
2012 Results: 1.Pastor Maldonado 2. Fernando Alonso 3. Kimi Räikkönen

There are seven previous Spanish GP winners still on the grid: Pastor Maldonado, Sebastian Vettel, Mark Webber, Jenson Button, Kimi Räikkönen, Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso.

For the past seven years, the Spanish GP has been won by a different driver

From the current grid, Kimi Räikkönen is the only driver to have won it more than once. He won it in 2008 for Ferrari and 2005 for McLaren

Ferrari are the most successful team at the Circuit de Catalunya with seven wins under their belt

The Spanish GP was first held at the Circuit de Catalunya in 1991 and so 2013 will be the 23rd running of it

Of the 22 races held the race winner has come from pole 18 times

Heikki Kovalainen will once again get behind the wheel of the Caterham for FP1

Alan Jones will be the driver steward this weekend

With the start of the European season generally comes a raft of significant upgrades. The Spanish GP is another one which can prove to be tough on the tyres and proves to be notoriously difficult for overtaking. There are a number of high speed corners, as well as medium and low-speed, and a long pit straight – generally a little bit of everything thrown in for drivers to contend with. Teams have a long history of testing at the circuit pre-season and so drivers all well accustomed to it come race weekend. Pirelli will bring the hard and medium compound tyres to this race. There will be two DRS zones – one between Turn 9 and Turn 10, and the other on the pit straight.

What came before?

Sebastian Vettel took a controlling victory at the Bahrain GP, ahead of Kimi Räikkönen and Romain Grosjean to produce an exact replica of the 2012 results. Paul di Resta equalled his best ever finish by bringing his Force India home in fourth while Lewis Hamilton came back from a difficult opening stint to finish fifth. While team orders came to the fore after both Red Bull and Mercedes deployed them at the Malaysian GP, they were in the spotlight again in Bahrain but for a different reason. Having been urged by Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh to get his elbows out, Sergio Perez came out all guns blazing. After failing to make the pole-position shoot out yet again, while team-mate Jenson Button slipped through, Perez revealed his car was set up for the race. The pair were involved in a spirited on-track battle which saw them bang wheels and run each other off the road. Perez eventually muscled his way through to finish sixth while Button had to make another stop and ended the day in tenth. Perez finished the race just seven tenths down on Lewis Hamilton.

Elsewhere, following his commanding win in China, Fernando Alonso had a disappointing race. A DRS problem, which saw the flap jammed open, left him having to pit two times to close it. He then spent the rest of the race having to defend and attack with no DRS available to him, and ended up finishing in eighth place. His team-mate Felipe Massa was not so lucky as to salvage points after picking up a puncture, ending the day in 15th spot. Pole sitter Nico Rosberg lost out in the race and he also made an extra stop, dropping down to finish tenth.

What’s to come?

The Spanish GP is traditionally where teams bring their first significant upgrades of the year, having spent the first four races of the year in Australia, Malaysia, China and Bahrain. So look out for an array of new parts, including front wings, sidepods, and rear wings, as teams look to maximise their car’s potential. All eyes will specifically be on McLaren as they look to pick up the pace, quite literally, after a disappointing start to the season. They currently lie sixth in the constructors’ championship, with 23 points – 86 behind championship leaders Red Bull already – and a best placed finish of fifth place. For a team who are used to winning races – they won seven in 2012 – their revolutionary car has not yet paid off. 2012 race winners Williams are another team currently in the doldrums and are looking to get their season back on track. Williams took the opportunity during the break to complete an aero test at Idiada, following which they will be bringing updates to Spain. The Spanish GP can prove to be an important race in terms of shaping the remainder of the championship.

This weekend will see teams provided with an extra set of the prototype hard tyres, with Pirelli tweaking the compound to make it more similar to 2012 in terms of durability.

Cameron Donald

Following two third places at the 2012 North West 200 – in the Supersport and Superbike classes – and two second place finishes (in 2008 and in the sole race in 2011) Cameron Donald is still chasing that elusive first win at the Triangle Circuit. Entering his third season with Wilson Craig Racing, the North West 200 will be Donald’s first road race of the year, before heading to the Isle of Man for the TT, where he has won twice.

In 2012, Donald was one of four main riders who helped the Honda TT Legends team to fourth overall in the Endurance World Championship. Their season was the topic of an ITV4 documentary, emphasising the highs and lows of competing in Endurance racing, as well as showcasing the team and rider’s trips to the North West 200 and Isle of Man TT. After two years with the team, Donald took the decision to stand down as he wanted to spend more time at home in Australia.

The likeable Aussie will surely be one to look out for on race day.

Bruce Anstey

With nine North West 200 victories to his name, Bruce Anstey heads to the Triangle circuit with a wealth of experience. He lies sixth in the all time records list for wins at the North West and is also one of only nine men to win three or more races in one day. In 2012 he took a third place in the Supersport class, finishing behind a close fighting Alistair Seeley and William Dunlop. Rather impressively, Anstey has come away from the North West 200 with at least one podium every year since 2002, taking a total of 11 podiums on top of his nine wins. Even in 2011, when just one race was ran due to wet weather and oil on track, he finished third.

He will once again take to the roads on the Padgett’s Honda, hoping to add to his impressive wins and podium tally. He had a run out in the Superstock class at Thruxton recently in preparation for his road racing season, and will also be appearing at Oulton Park. He is due to take part in the Isle of Man TT in June and Ulster GP in August, as well as being confirmed for the inaugural Classic TT later in the summer.

This weekend the Irish road racing season will roar into life with the popular Cookstown 100. The likes of Guy Martin, Michael and William Dunlop, Dean Harrison, and Jamie Hamilton will take to the 2.1 mile Orritor Circuit to contest a jam-packed 16 race schedule. The entry list boasts almost 180 competitors, according to the race’s official website, with 37 Newcomers. Ryan Farquhar came away with four victories at the 2012 event – the most of anyone – bringing his total to 27 wins at Cookstown. He has now retired, therefore the races could be wide open.

Scarborough

While the Cookstown 100 may be the first Irish road race of the season, many riders were in action last weekend in Scarborough at the Ian Watson Spring Cup National road races at Oliver’s Mount. Guy Martin came away with three wins from three starts, in the Ian Watson Spring Cup feature race, and both Supersport races. Young gun Jamie Hamilton took two wins in the Supertwins class, backing this up with a third in the Superbike race. He led both of the races he won from start to finish, putting in a dominant performance at his first outing of the year. He was also captured on video having a sing-song, not even a minute before the whistle blew to signal the start of the warm-up lap.

Other winners during the day were Chris Palmer, Davy Morgan, and Keith Pringle. Race 5, the second Superbike race, was red flagged after five laps.

Cookstown 100

With just two and a half weeks until practice for the Vauxhaul International North West 200 commences, riders will be hoping to put in a strong performance this weekend. William and Michael Dunlop were not at Scarborough but have still been busy racing. William has raced in the first two rounds of the British Supersport championship, with Michael competing at the Bol d’Or with the Honda TT Legends team. Both will race at Cookstown.

Roads are due to close at 10am and re-open at 7.30pm at the latest.

Just over three weeks until the 2013 North West 200 starts…

William Dunlop

At the end of last year William Dunlop announced that he would be joining the Milwaukee Yamaha team for the 2013 season. As well as the North West 200, the Ballymoney rider will also contest the Isle of Man TT and Ulster GP with the team, along with other Irish National events. In 2012 Dunlop held off Alistair Seeley to win the first Supersport race on the Triangle circuit. That year he also set the 14th fastest time around the course ever. His first win there came when he was victorious in 2009 in the 125 and 250 races.

Talking about this year, William explained that Supersport will be his top priority as he aims to win both races, following his win last year.

Conor Cummins

Dunlop will be joining Manx rider Conor Cummins at the Milwaukee Yamaha team. On his North West 200 debut in 2006, Cummins picked up the Fastest Newcomer title, but he is still searching for that elusive first win. His best result was second in one of the 2010 Superbike races.

After overcoming injuries sustained in his 2010 TT crash and getting back to fitness, he was involved in a crash at the 2012 North West 200 where he injured his hand. Hopefully this year will be incident free and allow the Two Metre Man to reach his full potential.

Ian Lougher

Veteran road racer Ian Lougher, who has eight North West 200 victories to his name, is taking to the roads for his 31st season in 2013. This year sees him team up with WA Corless/Jackson Racing and will see him swap his Kawasaki for a Honda. He ended on a high last year with a successful Ulster GP, finishing second to Michael Dunlop in the Superstock race. The NW200 will be just the first of his outings this year as he will also once again contest the Isle of Man TT and Ulster GP. With many years of experience under his belt, it would be unwise to dis-count Ian Lougher on race-day.

Tyres, DRS and Mark Webber’s rotten luck were three of the main talking points after the Chinese Grand Prix just three days ago. Fernando Alonso took a dominating victory, finishing the race ahead of Kimi Räikkönen and Lewis Hamilton. It was a race full of strategy as drivers worked to make the most of the fast degrading soft tyres. This weekend Pirelli have opted to bring the medium and hard compound tyres, having previously stated they would be bringing softs. Bahrain throws up another challenge, with a track in the middle of the desert and high temperatures. There have been ten different race leaders at the three races so far, and three drivers from three different teams have taken the win, but who will do it in Bahrain?

Bahrain GP Stats

Circuit Name: Bahrain International Circuit
Number of Laps: 57
Circuit Length: 5.412km
Lap Record: 1:30.252 M Schumacher (2004)
2012 Results: 1.Sebastian Vettel 2. Kimi Räikkönen 3. Romain Grosjean

There are four previous winners of the Bahrain still on the grid: Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, and Felipe Massa. Alonso has won it three times, Massa twice, and both Vettel and Button have one victory here.

After entering his 200th GP weekend at the Malaysia GP, Bahrain is due to be Mark Webber’s 200th race start

Current championship leader Sebastian Vettel held off returnee Kimi Räikkönen in 2012 to take victory

The 2012 Bahrain GP was the location of Romain Grosjean’s first podium in Formula One

This will be the ninth edition of the Bahrain GP despite having its inaugural race in 2009. The 2011 race was cancelled due to political unrest.

Heikki Kovalainen will make his Formula One return, driving in Friday Practice for Caterham

Mika Salo will be the driver steward this weekend

The Bahrain Grand Prix generally throws up all sorts of factors for teams to take into consideration. The high ambient temperatures and dusty nature of the track will be tough on the engines. The style of the circuit, with low speed corners and long straights means big braking zones. Tyre degradation is expected to be high due to the hot temperatures, particularly on the rears. There will be two DRS zones – the first has its detection point just before Turn 14, activating down the pit straight, while the second comes between Turns 9 and 10.

What came before?

Fernando Alonso took a controlled and dominating victory at a strategic Chinese Grand Prix. He had started the race in third place, but after another of his strong starts he was up into second and hustling pole sitter Lewis Hamilton for the lead. Kimi Räikkönen was bogged down at the start and lost out to both Alonso and Felipe Massa, but drove to an impressive second place. He got into an altercation with McLaren’s Sergio Perez in the early stages of the race and lost part of his nose, but drove around the problem to finish on the podium. Hamilton had to hold of Sebastian Vettel on the last few laps, after the Red Bull driver finished the race on soft tyres having started on the mediums. The leaders had taken the other option of getting the softs out of the way at the start and using the more durable medium compound tyres for the rest of the race. Jenson Button was another driver who started on mediums and he gave McLaren something to feel positive about after finishing in fifth place. There were six race leaders and the lead changed hands nine times, with Alonso eventually victorious and winning by a ten second margin.

Mark Webber had a weekend to forget in China after being disqualified from qualifying due to running out of fuel in Q2 and not being able to provide the required sample. He started from the pit-lane and made a strategic stop after one lap to get his soft tyres out of the way. He fought his way through the field and made contact with Jean-Eric Vergne, a move which has resulted in a three place grid drop for Bahrain. After another pit-stop he lost a wheel, leading to his retirement from the race and Red Bull being fined for unsafe release.

What’s to come?

As well as Webber’s aforementioned penalty, Esteban Gutierrez will drop five places on the grid in Bahrain. He crashed into Adrian Sutil during the Chinese Grand Prix and damaged the Force India driver’s rear wing, causing him to retire. Last year saw a successful race for the Lotus team with both drivers on the podium with Red Bull’s Vettel ahead of them. Bahrain provides a different challenge to China, with a higher ambient temperature and dust and wind causing additional issues. Alonso has won at the Bahrain International Circuit three times previously, and coming off the back of a win in China, he will be hoping to continue his form. The championship is nicely poised after three races with the top four separated by just twelve points. Massa and Webber are not far off the front either, just 22 and 26 points back respectively. McLaren are due to bring extensive upgrades to their car for Spain, but they will be hoping to continue making small steps forward this weekend. Nico Rosberg was unfortunate to retire from the Chinese GP, and is hoping that he will go better in Bahrain, the race where he made his debut seven years ago.

Tyres will no doubt be of great interest again this weekend – who will make them work best? And more importantly, will we see a fourth different winner?
