Force India has confirmed that Nico Hulkenberg will return to the team for 2014.
Hulkenberg entered Formula One as a test driver in 2009, driving for Williams. He then raced for them in 2010 before joining Force India in a test driver role in 2011. He was promoted to a race seat in 2012 but left the team after just a year to join Sauber for 2013. It has now been confirmed that he will return to Force India for the 2014 season and beyond after agreeing a multi-year deal.
“I am happy to come back to Sahara Force India,” Hulkenberg said. “The team is aiming high for next year and I believe that the experience I have gained over the years will help us achieve those goals. I genuinely believe that we can have a competitive package in 2014. I’ve heard a lot of positive things about the Mercedes engine as well, so I think there is a lot to be excited about for next year”.
Team Principal Vijay Mallya is just as enthusiastic about the move. “I’m delighted to see Nico back,” he said. “When he drove for us in 2012, it became clear he was an exceptional talent and he has continued to impress everyone in the paddock with his strong performances this season. Having Nico in our line-up is a real statement of intent and a huge boost for everyone associated with the team. We have high hopes and expectations for 2014 and by signing Nico we have put ourselves in the best position to achieve those objectives and enjoy what could be our most competitive season yet.”
“I know this team and I can see their determination,” Hulkenberg added. “It’s a great bunch of people and we all share the same hunger for success!”
The identity of Hulkenberg’s team-mate is yet to be announced. Current drivers Paul di Resta and Adrian Sutil are both in the frame, with Sergio Perez’s name also being linked to the drive following his departure from McLaren. The 2014 grid as it stands can be seen here.
