Nico Rosberg has shown just what Mercedes can do by going 1.3 seconds faster than anyone else. Jenson Button ended the session in second place with Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso going third fastest.
A stream of cars led by Jean-Eric Vergne got the third and final practice session under-way before qualifying. There was an early problem for Esteban Gutierrez, who slowed out on track with what was revealed to be a gearbox problem. Subsequently he has had to make a change and will drop five places on the grid after qualifying. Another driver suffering the same fate is Williams’ Valtteri Bottas. Both Lotus drivers managed to get some running under their belts after a disastrous start to the weekend, with Romain Grosjean ending the session slowest and with only four laps, although it was better than nothing. Pastor Maldonado faired only slightly better, finishing in 18th place, 5.3 seconds off the pace but with 15 laps.
As they continued to push to find the best lap-time, a number of drivers had runs across the gravel including Kevin Magnussen, Jenson Button and Marcus Ericsson. Other drivers struggled with their tyres and set-ups of the car. The changing weather conditions also played a part with the wind causing problems and dark clouds looming over the circuit threatening rain.
