The road racing season will race into action this weekend with the Spring Cup at Oliver’s Mount in Scarborough.
For the first time in its history, the Spring Cup will be a two day event, taking place on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th April featuring many ‘big’ names from the world of road racing. The likes of Dean Harrison, Lee Johnston, Ian Lougher and Guy Martin will take to the 2.43 mile track in Scarborough as well as some newcomers to the event.
Last year Martin secured a hat-trick of victories taking wins in both Superbike races – including the Ian Watson Spring Cup feature race – and the Supersport class. In the first race of the day – the Superbike A race – Martin took a comfortable win ahead of Harrison and Johnston. In the Superbike B race Daley Mathison secured the top step of the podium ahead of Gareth Keys and Rodger Wibberley. Both Mathison and Keys will be in action again this year. Martin went on to back up his Superbike win with victory in the Supersport class, this time ahead of Harrison and James Cowton. In the B race it was Jamie Coward leading the way ahead of Davy Morgan and Mark Lister.
Ivan Lintin – who will also be racing this year – beat Ryan Farquhar and James Cowton in the Super Lightweight class with Alistair Howarth beating Seamus Elliott and Justin Waring in the Lightweights. Elsewhere Sidecars were also in action and Ian and Carl Bell won both legs. In the final race of the day – the Ian Watson Spring Cup – Martin completed the treble, beating Lintin and Harrison.
The event will see Martin make his debut on Tyco’s new BMWs, having made the switch from Suzukis. Johnston is also BMW mounted and will be riding a Triumph in the Supersport class. Other contenders include Lintin, who has a number of wins to his name at Oliver’s Mount and will be racing for RC Express this year and Harrison on the Yamaha R1 for Mar-Train Racing.
