Rob Collard is a current British Touring Car driver who drives for West Surrey Racing (the eBay Motors Team) and is their highest placed driver in both the drivers championship and the independents championship. He was also the 2003 Independent Champion. Collard has been around in the championship for 12 years, having varying success’ through the years. Here we take a look at his racing career, his season so far and what the fans say and like about him!
British Touring Car Championship (2000 – present)
Collard, a former Hot Rod Champion and Formula Ford Zetec competitor, joined the British Touring Car Championship, driving for Bintcliffe Sport in Class B. He came 12th overall in the Production class and from 2001 – 2004 he ran his own team – Collard Racing, running a Renault Clio, before switching to a Vauxhall. He made his first appearance for West Surrey Racing in 2005, when he became their sole entry in the championship. He came seventh in the overall championship taking two wins on the way and three other podiums. He remained with the team for 2006 when he was joined by Colin Turkington and the team became known as Team RAC due to their title sponsors. In 2007 he moved to the BTCC support series Porsche Carrera Cup to drive for Team Parker Racing, for the start of the season. He contested the final BTCC rounds that year for GR Asia. Collard returned to the BTCC in 2008 driving for Motorbase in a BMW (who became Airwaves in 2009) and finished the season overall in 12th. He took two victories in 2009, but a number of retirements in the middle of the season, put paid to any chance of fighting for the championship. He ended up in sixth in the overall championship – his best result.
In 2010 Collard made his return to West Surrey racing to replace Turkington who, despite being the 2009 champion, was not able to raise the funds to continue in the expensive championship. He finished eighth in both 2010 and 2011 but lies in fifth place in the overall championship currently and second in the Independents’ Championship. 2012 is proving to be Collard’s most successful in BTCC so far with three victories – two of these coming at Knockhill when the team took two dominating one-two finishes in race one and two. He also won the first race of the season, but it has been mixed since then. As mentioned earlier he is leading the eBay Motors charge in both championships and aiming to win his first title since 2003.
