Ten teams – each with two drivers – will contest the inaugural 2014/2015 Formula E season. For the first season every team will run Spark-Renault SRT_01E Formula E cars with season two becoming an open championship when they will be allowed to design and develop their own cars.
A team established especially for Formula E, Amlin Aguri is a Japanese based team running Katherine Legge and Antonio Felix da Costa. Former Formula 1 driver and team owner Aguri Suzuki is the Executive Chairman and will be working with former F1 designer Mark Preston as Team Principal.
Katherine Legge is an established racing driver who has experience in the British Formula Ford, Formula Renault and Formula 3 championships as well as the American Formula Renault 2000 championship. She has contested Champ Car, IndyCar and the United Sports Car Championship.
Takuma Sato started out in Formula 3, winning the British Formula 3 championship in 2001. In 2002 he made his Formula 1 debut driving for Jordan, before moving to BAR Honda as a test and reserve driver and getting his first outing for the team at the 2003 Japanese Grand Prix. In 2006 he moved to Super Aguri before leaving F1 in 2008 when the team pulled out. He has also raced in IndyCar since 2010.
Andretti Formula E
Andretti Autosport is an established squad, fielding teams in the likes of IndyCar, Indy Lights, and Pro Mazda. Andretti Formula E will have former F1 driver Frank Montagny competing for them. Michael Andretti is is team’s President, Chairman and CEO and JF Thorman is their Team Principal.
Franck Montagny is another Formula One alumni, acting as test driver for a number of teams including Renault, Force India and Jordan. He also raced for Super Aguri. He has raced in the FIA WEC and at Le Mans, and raced for Andretti in IndyCar.
Completing Andretti’s all French line-up is Lotus F1’s test driver Charles Pic. Most recently he raced for Caterham in Formula One, having moved his way through GP2, Formula Renault 3.5, and Formula Campus.
Audi Sport ABT
ABT Sportsline is an established German team – around for 118 years – who have enjoyed success in DTM, ADAC GT Masters, and the ADAC Formula Masters. Team Principal Hans-Jürgen Abt is the son of Johann Abt who set up the team.
Daniel Abt is the son of Team Principal Hans-Jürgen Abt. He has raced in ADAC Formel Masters, Formula 3 Euro Series, and GP3. In 2012 he finished third in the GP3 season. He currently races in GP2 having made his debut in 2013. He lies 12th in the season with three rounds (six races) left.
Lucas di Grassi
Lucas di Grassi has raced in British Formula 3, GP2, the FIA World Endurance Championship, and Formula One. In 2008 and 2009 he balanced competing in the GP2 championship with acting as Renault’s third driver. He raced for Virgin Racing (now Marussia) in 2010 before becoming the Pirelli test driver in 2011.
China Racing was established in 2004, competing in A1GP. They have also raced in Superleague Formula and FIA GT1. Steven Lu is the CEO, Yu Liu is the Chairman, and established team leader Adrian Campos is Team Manager. Campos established Campos Racing in 1998 and entered Formula One in 2010 as HRT.
Nelson Piquet Jr
Nelson Piquet Jr is the son of Formula One world champion Nelson Pique. He raced in GP2 before becoming a test driver for Renault. He raced for Renault in Formula One in 2008 and 2009 before heading to NASCAR in 2011. He also competes in the Global RallyCross Championship.
Another former Formula One test driver, Ho-Pin Tung has raced in Formula BMW, German F3, GP2 and World Endurance Championship. He has raced for China Racing before when he took part in A1GP getting one podium. He is another driver who has also raced in IndyCar.
Dragon Racing have been around since 2006 (then Luzco Dragon Racing) and has raced at the Indianapolis 500 and IndyCar. Jay Penske is the Team Owner and President while Paul Woolnaugh is the Vice President.
Jerome d’Ambrosio started off single seater racing in Belgian Formula Renault and was signed up as part of the Renault F1 driver development programme. He has also driven in the French and Italian Formula Renault Series as well as Formula Renault 3.5. He then progressed to GP2. In 2011 he made his Formula One racing debut with Marussia before becoming Lotus F1’s test and reserve driver for 2012 and 2013.
Oriol Servia is a Spanish racing driver who has spent most of his racing career racing in America. He started out in French Formula Renault and Formula 3 before moving to Indy Lights. He has raced in the CART Championship, the Champ Car World Series, and IndyCar.
Like Amlin Aguri, e.dams-Renault was established especially for the Formula E championship. A partnership between Jean-Paul Driot – founder of single seater team Dams set up in 1988 – and Formula One world champion Alain Prost. Dams have won numerous titles in International F3000, A1GP, GP2 and Formula Renault 3.5.
Like Daniel Abt, Nicolas Prost will be racing for his father’s team. A late starter, Prost started racing at the age of 22, racing in Formula 3, Formula 3000, and FIA GT1. In 2013 he acted as a test driver for the Lotus F1 team. He won LMP1 at Le Mans in 2014 racing for Rebellion Racing along with fellow Formula E driver Nick Heidfeld and Mathias Beche.
Sebastien Buemi completes the all French team. He is currently leading the World Endurance Championship, racing for Toyota Racing, and balances those commitments with being Red Bull Racing’s test driver. He formerly drove for Red Bull’s sister team Toro Rosso. He previously raced in GP2, Formula 3, and Formula Renault.
Mahindra is already an established name in the production of electric cars and the Mahindra Racing team is led by their MD Anand Mahindra. Their Team Principal is Dilbagh Gill and S.P. Shukla is their Chairman. Mahindra Racing are an established team in the world of motorbikes, running in the Moto 3 Championship.
Karun Chandhok has vast experience in single seaters. Starting out in British Formula 3, he represented India in A1 Grand Prix, and won the inaugural Asian Formula Renault V6 championship. He has tested for Red Bull Racing, competed in GP2 and raced for HRT in Formula One. He then became a Team Lotus test driver (now Caterham) before moving to the World Endurance Championship.
Bruno Senna will join fellow former HRT driver Karun Chandhok at Mahindra Racing. He started racing in Formula BMW before progressing to Formula 3 and GP2. In 2008 he tested for the Honda F1 team and made his race debut in 2011 for HRT. He then became a Lotus Renault GP test driver before moving to Williams in 2012. In 2013 and 2014 he is racing in the World Endurance Championship.
Trulli Racing is a team established by highly experienced Formula One driver Jarno Trulli. He will also be driving for the team. Lucio Cavuto is the team’s Team Principal while Francesco Guarnieri is Chairman and CEO.
Jarno Trulli is the fifth most experienced driver in Formula One history competing in 256 Grand Prix and has driven for Minardi, Prost, Jordan, Renault, Toyota and Lotus Racing (now Caterham). He took his first and only Grand Prix victory in 2004 at Monaco. Before Formula One he raced in German and Italian Formula 3.
Jarno Trulli will be joined by fellow Italian driver Michela Cerruti. She started racing in the Italian Endurance Championship and has also raced in the Superstars series, Italian GT, and Campionato Italian GT . This year she is competing in Auto GP for Super Nova International and lies sixth in the championship.
Venturi is another key name in the world of electric cars and the racing team is another one formed for Formula E. There is a Hollywood element to the team with one of the co-owners being actor Leonardo di Caprio. It is also owned by Gildo Pallanca Pastor, Francesco Costa, and Bert Hedaya. The team is based in Monaco.
Nick Heidfeld is yet another highly experienced former Formula One driver taking part in the inaugural Formula E championship. After racing in German Formula 3 and International F3000, Heidfeld made his Formula One debut in 2000 at Prost. He has raced for Sauber, Jordan, Williams, BMW Sauber, and Lotus Renault. He has also acted as a test driver for McLaren Mercedes. More recently he has raced in endurance racing.
Frenchman Stephane Sarrazin has raced in Formula 3 and Formula 3000 and has also contested Formula One for Minardi. He has also tested for Prost and Toyota. He raced for the McLaren F3000 junior team and has raced at Le Mans for a number of years. He is racing in the World Endurance Championship for Toyota this year.
Virgin Racing previously competed in Formula One (the team is now Marussia) and Richard Branson’s next venture is a team in Formula E. Alex Tai, who has been involved with a number of Virgin’s pioneering technology projects, will be the team’s Team Principal.
Former Toro Rosso driver Jaime Alguersuari will be taking part in the inaugural Formula E season for Virgin Racing. Alguersuari has previously raced in Formula Renault 2.0, British F3 and junior Formulas in Italy. He got his Formula One debut in 2008 when he tested for Red Bull before making his racing debut in the latter half of 2009, replacing Sebastian Bourdais. He competed in two full seasons – 2010 and 2011 – before being dropped by the team along with Sebastien Buemi. He has since been the Pirelli test driver.
Mercedes GP’s test and reserve driver Sam Bird is also racing in Formula E. Having raced in Formula BMW, Formula Renault, and Formula 3, Bird had a successful GP2 career. In his rookie season (2010) he finished fifth overall, taking one race win. Having previously tested for the Williams F1 team he then moved to Mercedes to test in 2011. He finished as the runner-up in the 2013 GP2 season and has appeared in the World Endurance this championship this year.
