Michael Rutter rides Paton to Lightweight victory

Michael Rutter has won the Lightweight race at the Isle of Man TT, riding a Paton. He held off stiff competition from Martin Jessopp to take the win – his fifth at the TT.

Peter Hickman completed his 100% 2017 TT podium run by finishing third following his podiums in the Superbike, Supersport and Superstock races.

Ivan Lintin finished the race in fourth place ahead of Daniel Cooper, Josh Brookes and Michael Dunlop. James Cowton finished the race in eighth place beating Michael Sweeney and Jamie Hodson. Barry Furber was 11th finishing ahead of Timothee Monot, Xavier Denis, Craig Neve and Callum Laidlaw. Rounding out the top 20 finishers were Rob Hodson, John Barton, Maria Costello, newcomer Paul Jordan and Dave Moffitt.

Rutter took the race lead early on – leading team-mate Stefano Bonetti at Glen Helen – and he increased his lead lap on lap. The advantage over Bonetti by the end of lap one was nearly four and a half seconds. Bonetti became a retirement from the race on lap two with Jessopp moving into second place. Ivan Lintin was running in third before a slow pit stop dropped him down to fourth. Rutter’s advantage at the end of the race was nearly ten seconds. It was his first TT victory since 2013 – when he won the TT Zero race – and it backed up his Supertwin win at the North West 200.

Birchall brothers break lap record on way to Sidecar victory

Ben and Tom Birchall were the winning partnership of this year’s opening Sidecar race, breaking their own lap record on the way. They set a new outright lap record of 117.119mph – the first 117mph lap by a sidecar at the event.

They beat John Holden and new passenger Lee Cain by just over 25 seconds while Dave Molyneux and Dan Sayle completed the podium finishers. Alan Founds finished in fourth place with Jake Lowther while Tim Reeves and Mark Wilkes were fifth. Peter Founds and Jevan Walmsley finished sixth, ahead of Conrad Harrison & Andrew Winkle, Tony Baker & Fiona Baker-Holden, and Karl Bennett & Maxime Vasseur. Wayne Lockey and Mark Sayers were the partnership who rounded out the top ten finishers.

Outside of the top ten Estelle Leblond & Melanie Farrier were 11th ahead of Mick Alton & Chrissie Clancy. Robert Handcock finished 12th with passenger Ken Edwards while Gregory Lambert & Julie Canipa were 13th. Allan Schofield & Steve Thomas ended the race 14th while Darren Hope and Shaun Parker took 15th.

Rain started to fall on the third and final lap but competitors were able to make it home to complete the race. It was the fifth victory for the Birchall brothers at the Isle of Man TT.

Michael Dunlop takes win number 14 with Supersport victory

Michael Dunlop was the victorious rider in today’s Supersport race, beating James Hillier and Peter Hickman.

The Ballymoney man had suffered disappointment in yesterday’s Superbike race when his bike broke down on the second lap, but he led across the line for three of the four Supersport laps. Hillier finished on the podium after missing out yesterday while Hickman finished in third again. Rain earlier in the day delayed proceedings and many riders were cautious on the first lap while they assessed road conditions.

William Dunlop lost third place at the end of lap three and eventually finished in fourth place while Ian Hutchinson came home fifth nearly a minute off Michael Dunlop. Gary Johnson finished in sixth ahead of Bruce Anstey, Dan Kneen, Conor Cummins and James Cowton. Josh Brookes was 11th with Martin Jessopp 12th, Ivan Lintin 13th, Craig Neve 14th and Andrew Dudgeon 15th.

Daley Mathison ended the race 16th, beating Horst Saiger. Newcomer Adam Mclean was an impressive 18th in his first ever TT race ahead of Daniel Cooper and Daniel Hegarty.

Dean Harrison, Davy Morgan, Mike Russell, and Rob Hodson were amongst the race retirements all OK. Tom Weeden was taken by airmed to Nobles for chest and back injuries. Guy Martin opted to sit out of the race following his accident yesterday when he crashed at Doran’s Bend on lap one of the Superbike race.

Dunlop’s win draws him level with Mike Hailwood with 14 TT wins.

Revised TT schedule as poor weather halts practice again

The Isle of Man TT organisers have released a revised schedule due to practice sessions being disrupted by poor weather conditions.

A decision was made on Thursday afternoon to cancel this evening’s scheduled practice due to persistent rain. Today’s schedule will now run tomorrow. This therefore means that a revised race schedule has been put in place with the opening Superbike race now moved to Sunday.

The poor weather conditions have wrecked havoc with this week’s practice sessions with riders just getting one evening of running in so far.  The action had been due to start on Saturday but was cancelled with Monday also being called off. There was running on Tuesday before one flying lap and one speed controlled lap on Wednesday after rain halted proceedings. The TT circuit is obviously unique and while conditions can be OK for practice in some parts, the mountain part of the course can often throw up problems such as low lying fog.

The revised schedule from Saturday is as follows:

Saturday

  • 10.40 – 12.00 – Superbike/Superstock/Supersport/Newcomers (all classes except Lightweight) qualifying
  • 12.05 – 13.05 Sidecar qualifying
  • 14.10 – 15.30 Supersport/Lightweight/Newcomers (all classes) qualifying
  • 15.40 – 16.30 Sidecar qualifying
  • 16.35 1 lap for Superbike/Superstock/Supersport qualifying
  • 17.00 1 lap for TT Zero qualifying

Sunday

  • 14.00 Superbike Race (6 laps)
  • 16.25 Sidecar 1 lap qualifying
  • 16.40 1 lap for TT Zero qualifying

Monday

  • 10.45 Supersport Race (4 laps
  • 12.45 1 lap Superstock qualifying
  • 14.15 Sidecar Race (3 laps)
  • 15.50 1 lap Superbike/Superstock/Lightweight qualifying
  • 16.05 1 lap TT Zero qualifying

Tuesday

  • 12.15 Superstock Race (4 laps)
  • 14.15 2 laps Sidecar qualifying
  • 15.40 1 lap Lightweight qualifying
  • 15.55 1 lap TT Zero qualifying

The schedule is then due to revert to plan from Wednesday onwards weather permitting.
