Michael Dunlop doubles up with Superbike win

Following his Junior race win earlier in the day, Michael Dunlop was back in the winner’s enclosure following the Superbike race at the Classic TT.

At the end of the first lap Dunlop’s lead on his Suzuki was seven seconds over Dean Harrison in second with James Hillier third. The gap increased to 10 seconds by Glen Helen on the second lap, with Harrison sitting 4.8 seconds in front of Hillier on corrected time. Dunlop’s lead increased to 13 seconds by Ballaugh, 15 seconds at Ramsey, 17 seconds at the Bungalow and 18 seconds by Cronk ny Mona. By the end of the second lap Dunlop was 18 seconds clear with Harrison eight seconds ahead of Hillier.

Dunlop pitted at the end of the second lap and broke Bruce Anstey’s Classic TT lap record of 126.261mph with 126.808mph. By the start of the third lap Dunlop’s lead was down to 2.369 seconds but increased over the course of the third and fourth laps.

The Ballymoney man’s eventual gap over the line was 15.697 seconds with Hillier 16 seconds behind Harrison in third. Michael Rutter was fourth ahead of Jamie Coward, Horst Saiger, William Dunlop and Conor Cummins. Gary Johnson and Danny Webb rounded out the top ten finishers. In 11th was Alexander Pickett – the leading privateer – with Timothee Monot 12th, Kiaran Hankin 13th, Ryan Kneen 14th and David Hewson 15th.

Several hours after the conclusion of the race a statement was released stating that “four machines have been disqualified from the final result due to technical infringements”. The four Kawasaki riders disqualified from the race were Harrison, Hillier, Coward and Saiger. This meant Rutter and William Dunlop were promoted to the podium.

Michael Dunlop crowned Solo champion at Southern 100

Following his record breaking form at this year’s Isle of Man TT, Michael Dunlop returned to the island and was crowned Solo champion at the Southern 100.

The BMW rider beat Dean Harrison in the Solo Championship race and also took victories in the Open race and the two Superbike races, enjoying a successful week at the Billown circuit.

In the Open race, Dunlop raced to a 12 second victory over Ivan Lintin with Dan Kneen finishing third on his return to racing. Jamie Coward and Dan Hegarty were fourth and fifth respectively, ahead of Alan Bonner, Ryan Kneen, Davy Morgan and Mark Parrett. James Cowton was the leading 600 rider home.

Darryl Tweed won the first 125/400cc race comfortably beating Dan Sayle in the process. Adrian Kershaw finished third ahead of Adam McLean, Mick Goodings and Paul Gartland. The second race in that class was won by Seamus Elliott while Tweed had to settle for second. Kershaw was third once again.

Dunlop showed he was the Superbike form man with two strong wins in the class. In the first race he beat Dan Kneen by over 25 seconds with Lintin coming home third. Elliott was fourth while Anthony Redmond finished fifth. The second race was red flagged following an incident involving Bonner. He thankfully escaped serious injury but suffered an injury to his hand. When the race restarted a number of riders opted not to take the start. Dunlop won, beating Ryan Kneen and Hegarty.

Bonner’s team-mate Lintin enjoyed success in both 250/650cc races. He beat Rob Hodson in the first with Rhys Hardistry – on a 250cc – in third. Lintin beat Cowton and Hodson in the second race.

Harrison won both Supersport races, beating Lintin by just 0.037 seconds in the first. Colin Stephenson finished third ahead of Cowton, Hodson, Brendan Fargher, and Tweed. McLean was eighth ahead of Jamie Williams and Brad Vicars. Harrison was victorious in the second race as well, this time by five seconds over Coward, Cowton, Lintin and Stephenson. The B race was won by Thomas Gottschalk with Dave Quirk second and James Hinchliffe third.

The Championship races were won by Dunlop and the Sidecar pairing of Tim Reeves and Patrick Farrance. Dunlop beat Harrison and Lintin in the Solo Championship race with Dan Kneen, Coward, Elliott, Hegarty, Davy Morgan, Parrett, and Redmond rounding out the top ten.

Reeves and Farrance won both Sidecar races. They beat Dave Molyneux & Dan Sayle and Ben Birchall & Tom Birchall in the first. The second race saw the Birchall partnership move up to second while TT winners John Holden & Andy Winkle finished in third.

Guy Martin retains Solo Championship at Southern 100 for third year running

Guy Martin has won the Solo Championship race at the Southern 100 for the third consecutive year.

The Tyco BMW rider took victory in the Senior race beating Michael Dunlop by just under a tenth of a second with Dean Harrison – who won five races at last year’s event – coming home in third ahead of Dan Kneen. Ivan Lintin, James Cowton, and Jamie Coward were fifth, sixth and seventh respectively ahead of Billy Redmayne, Anthony Redmond and Michael Russell. He then went on to win the Solo Championship race beating Kneen and Lintin. Dunlop had been running in third place but crashed out, leaving it to Martin and Kneen to battle it out for the race win. In the end Martin’s winning advantage over the Padgetts rider was just seven tenths of a second. Behind the top three Russ Mountford was fourth ahead of Cowton, Coward, Mark Goodings, Redmayne, Mark Parrett and Russell.

TT winner Lintin beat Cowton to victory in the first Supertwins race while Coward rounded out the podium finishers. Also in the top ten of the race were Russell, Andrew Dudgeon, Redmond, Dave Moffitt, Dean Osborne, Seamus Elliott, and Callum Laidlaw. Elliott then went on to take the win in the Supersport race. Harrison had been leading the race but when he retired on the final lap, it was Elliott who was in the right place at the right time to take advantage and secure the victory, holding off Mountford and Kneen. It has since been confirmed that Elliott will ride for the Wilson Craig team at the upcoming Armoy Road Races. The top four riders – which also featured Lintin – were separated by under five seconds as they crossed the line. Coward was fifth, ahead of Redmayne, Joe Newbould, Dudgeon, Rob Hodson and Paul Smyth. Lintin doubled up with a win in the second Supertwin race, again flanked by Cowton and Coward.

Having retired from the first Supersport race while leading, Harrison secured victory in the second race beating Lintin and Kneen. Cowton was fourth ahead of race one winner Elliott. Mountford, Redmayne, Newbould, and Hodson were sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth respectively while Dudgeon rounded out the top ten. The Supersport B race was comfortably won by Davy Morgan with Jonathan Howarth and Brad Vicars in second and third.

The 600/1000cc race was red flagged after just one lap on its initial run and it had been Martin who had been leading. In the re-run race it was Dunlop who took the victory but by the narrowest of margins, ahead of Martin and with Harrison finishing in third. Kneen was fourth ahead of Lintin, Mountford, Coward, Goodings, Elliott and Cowton. Alistair Haworth comfortably beat Adrian Kershaw in the 125/400cc race with Dave Corlett in third. Paul Robinson was fourth ahead of Paul Smyth and Mark Goodings, while Dave Taylor, Scott Miller, Tony Limer and Tom Snow rounded out the top ten.

It wasn’t just solo riders in action at the Billown circuit as Sidecars also took to the track. Their first race was won by Tim Reeves with passenger Mark Wilkes. They finished ahead of Ian and Carl Bell in second with John Holden and Dan Sayle coming home in third. Reeves and Wilkes then took victory in the Championship race, this time with Holden and Sayle second and Ian and Carl Bell third.

Ian Lougher wins Bennetts 500cc Classic TT race

Ian Lougher has won the Bennetts 500cc race at the 2014 Classic TT. He survived a race of attrition which saw John McGuinness, Ryan Farquhar and Michael Rutter all retire from the lead of the race. Other retirements included Michael and William Dunlop, with the latter not getting further than Ballacraine on his first lap.

Leading the pack away from number one, McGuinness initially built up a lead but failed to finish the first lap and it was team-mate Farquhar who led by the end of lap one. He was ahead of Lougher and Dan Cooper and the first two chose to pit at the end of lap one. Lougher then incurred a 30 second penalty after speeding in the pit-lane. While those two were pitting, Cooper eased into the lead but it was soon Rutter who became the lead rider. Both Farquhar and Rutter retired in lap three allowing Cooper back into the lead.

Lougher took the lead on lap four after a charge and he finished the race over 34 seconds clear of Cooper. In third place was Bruce Anstey who had enjoyed a battle with Michael Dunlop through the race until the Ballymoney man retired from the race. In an impressive fourth place was Connor Behan ahead of Maria Costello, Mick Godfrey, and David Madsen-Mygdal. Mark Parrett finished ahead of 64 year old Charlie Williams, who was making his first competitive appearance on the mountain course since 1984. Peter Boast rounded out the top then.
